'Royal Oke' special train

Tickets are now being advertised for the 'Royal Oke', a special GWR HST charter train between Okehampton and London Paddington and return on Saturday March 18th.


Organised by OkeRail the purpose of the train is to demonstrate the interest in a possible re-instatement of a regular service between Okehampton and Exeter. A Buffet car service of hot & cold food and drinks will be available.

Approximate departure times are:-
Okehampton 0745
Crediton 0815 (
connects with 0705 from Barnstaple due Crediton 0800)
Exeter St Davids 0835
Arrive at Paddington 1100 

Approximate return departure times are:
Paddington 1805
Exeter St Davids 2025
Crediton 2035 (connects with 2114 to Barnstaple)
Arrive at Okehampton 2115

Forthcoming Social Event

On Wednesday 5th April at The Rising Sun Hotel Umberleigh, starting at 1830 until approx 2015. there will be an evening showing by the Dartmoor Rly. Supporters Assoc., of a specially compiled and historically fascinating selection of BBC,TSW, and privately filmed archive film footage of railways ofthe South West and of the SR ' Withererd Arm 'in particular (including considerable coverage at various dates between Exeter and Barnstaple and also on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway).

The timing of this event has been arranged to enable convenient travel by train to and from Umberleigh from both the Barnstaple & Exeter directions.

The Rising Sun Hotel is just a couple of minutes level walk from the Railway stn and is open from 1700, with food served from 1800 to 2100.

Cost of entry to this event is £3 per person towards the costs incurred. Pre-booking to attend is not required.

Bideford Railway Heritage

Nearest  station - Barnstaple

Bideford Railway Heritage Centre manages the Bideford station site and Instow signal box, which are both on the old railway line from Barnstaple to Bideford in North Devon. The railway line is now part of the popular Tarka Trail and so the two sites provide points of interest to cyclists and walkers alike, as well as to the more general visitor. There is a museum at Bideford and also tearooms.

The Dartmoor Railway runs from Mid-Devon to the edge of Dartmoor, providing car free access to the Dartmoor National Park for walkers and cyclists.

The Old Station Tea Rooms at Okehampton Railway Station offer a delicious selection ranging from cooked meals to snacks, cakes and hot drinks. Enquiries: 01837 52762

Monday and Tuesday - 10.00am to 4.00pm (restricted menu)

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - 10.00am to 4.00pm

Saturday and Sunday - 9.00am to 6.00pm

Meldon Buffet is in a former buffet coach, and enjoys tremendous views of Meldon Viaduct, Meldon Dam and the West Okement valley. The menu is more limited than that of Okehampton.

It is currently open most Saturdays and Sundays from about 11.00am to 3.00pm.

However it is best to check on the day, either at Okehampton Station, or by calling 01837 52762.
