The northern terminus of the Tarka Line from Exeter, this station used to be a busy junction for lines from Taunton, Ilfracombe, and Torrington.  These days it has an hourly service to Exeter and Exmouth on Monday to Saturday, and a two hourly service on Sundays.

Stationmaster’s cafe
This award winning cafe is located in the original stationmaster’s house. Now under new management (as at April 2015), it is now open 06.30 until 17.15 Monday to Saturday and from mid May will also open on Sunday.

Cycle from Barnstaple along the estuary to Instow, Bideford, Torrington or beyond, with a round trip from 12 miles to 40 miles. There are numerous refreshment stops, places of interest and spectacular views. The estuary abounds with wild duck, widgeon, teal, mallard, dunlin, curlew, redshank, oystercatchers, and Canada geese. You may be lucky enough to glimpse a kingfisher.

On the other side of the estuary, you can cycle to Braunton and beyond, which is equally spectacular.
